2024 Reading Wrap Up’s

by Jefferz

Slightly late because of the holiday season rush but 2024 was a great year of reading, easily the highest total number of books read as well as total number of pages. While I use both Goodreads and Storygraph for tracking my reads and libraries, each platform has their own pro’s and con’s and their annual wrap ups are no exception.

Scores and Ratings:

According to my Storygraph wrap-up that allows for half-point ratings similar to TheBookGrind, my average score for 2024 was 3.57 which is a pretty notable jump from 2023’s 3.24. Not that I’m going soft, but this past year I read quite a few more sequel/series entries vs the previous year, the most notable being Pierce Brown’s Red Rising Saga and Martha Wells’ Murderot Diaries (I technically also read three entries in Ben Aaronvitch’s Rivers of London series but I had much more mixed feelings about them compared to the other two series).

Compared to previous years, 2024 was also a year that I focused heavily on working through my extensive ebook library holds and wish list tag that somehow still keeps growing despite how much I’ve been checking off. In 2024, 69% of my total pages read were via ebook compared to traditionally print copies, aka my Boox Page ereader has more than paid for itself! 2024 also included additional ARC reads that were very solid this year compared to books I pick from trending reader lists, booktok/gram suggestions or friends.

Reading Challenge:

Stepping things up from 2023, I set 2024’s reading challenge go for 40 books which I thought was a reasonable goal and increase. Needless to say, I smashed that goal with a total of 62 books, hitting the 40 book count in late summer. The raw count is slightly inflated since I had a handful of novellas included as well as several more whose page counts fell between 150-200.

2025 Upcoming Reads:

Looking at 2025, I am incrementally increasing my goal to 50 books which I think is definitely doable especially since this year I will be prioritizing reads that are closer to my preferred genres and content along with the variety of ARC’s I’ll hopefully have an opportunity to read. My reading list is so long that I’ll likely have less blind picks, preferring to be more selective while balancing my backlot (yes, I will finally read Fourth Wing that I have put off for the last two years, much to my friend’s mild irritation and excitement to see what I think). I also have my first Colleen Hoover read tentatively scheduled (I chose Verity, Hoover’s book closest to my preferred reads) as well as Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. Finally, I had two large and completely unnecessary PangoBooks hauls which I’ve kept putting off. The most notable ones in there are Stephen King’s 11/22/63 and Michael Crichton’s Timeline.

As a whole 2024 was an amazing year of reading but I’m already optimistic about 2025, let’s make this another good one!
