Perfect for fans of Gillian McAllister, Lisa Jewell and Claire Douglas.  “I know what your dad did.”  I set down my sandwich. “He wrote a book.”  The boy, whose name I no longer remember, had shaken his head, eyes sparkling with glee to be the one to tell me. To shatter my childhood right there in the school cafeteria. “Your dad killed his brother and sister. Murdered them in their own home.” Ghostwriter Olivia Dumont has spent her entire professional life hiding the fact that she is the only child of legendary horror author Vincent Taylor, famous not only for his novels, but for being the prime suspect in the brutal slaying of his siblings. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he’s never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad’s making a comeback, Luc’s back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.  To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He’s a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he’s never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately, apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.  But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a …

    June 17, 2024

The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton Genres: Adult, Dystopian, Fiction, Mystery Thriller, Science Fiction, Speculative Fiction Published by Sourcebooks on March 28, 2024 Format: eBook Pages: 368 Solve the murder to save what’s left of the world.  Outside the island there is nothing: the world was destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched.  On the island: it is idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists, living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they’re told by the scientists.  Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And then they learn that the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay. If the murder isn’t solved within 107 hours, the fog will smother the island—and everyone on it.  But the security system has also wiped everyone’s memories of exactly what happened the night before, which means that someone on the island is a murderer—and they don’t even know it.  And the …

    Timothy Janovsky: Never Been Kissed

    by Jefferz August 29, 2023
    August 29, 2023

Never Been Kissed by Timothy Janovsky Series: Boy Meets Boy #1 Genres: Coming of Age, Contemporary Fiction, Contemporary Romance, Fiction, Romance, Young Adult Published by Sourcebooks on August 29, 2023 Format: eBook, Paperback Pages: 279 Note: The following original review for this book is old and does not meet current review standards. A fully rewritten review is planned. As someone who does not like romance or comedy novels, this one was already fighting an uphill battle that it somehow got over (specifically the first 50 or so pages). A feel-good and easy casual read, this is a collegiate-set coming of (young adult) age story written with the unapologetically earnest and rose-tinted glasses tone that made Heartstopper so appealing. At times it tiptoes the line of being corny and cliche, but the witty banter and Wren’s hilariously relatable internal monologues helped to keep it in the perfect sweet spot comfort read for me. The inclusion of the senior and snappy divorcee/widowed character Alice Kelly who serves dual-roles as both a central plot mechanism and as a older social mentor for Wren was refreshing and different from what I’ve read in this genre. Timothy Janovsky also nails the internal battle introverted feeling folks …
